Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings and even explore galaxies in the Sky. You can also explore rich geographical content, save your toured places and share them with others. Google has recently carried Google Earth to the iPhone and iPod touch. This is such an impressive application that an Apple iPhone deserves to have.

Anyone who has used an Apple iPhone for more than a couple of hours will be familiar with the Google Earth’s interface in a flash. You can even see mountains in 3D by tilting your phone. The display goes from a flat, satellite-eye view to a 3D-like image. If you’re near mountainous terrain, you get a true sense of the topographical features of the land. This amazing feature is one of the reasons why Google Earth app is so interesting. However, some users noticed that the Google app 1.0 release tends to crash quite frequently, most often when they are looking at a zoomed-in image of something near a 3D surface and then tried to tilt or pan the image. Restarting the 16GB iPhone 3G doesn’t solve the issue. For sure Google will have this fixed on the release of the next issue.

Another interesting feature is it’s ability to find your exact location. You can turn on this feature, called geolocation, by just tapping on the location icon in the lower left corner of the display. You will be amazed how this feature works and how accurate the information is. A floating big blue pin will be shown on the screen right over your location. A Wikipedia layer is also one of the amazing features of the Google Earth app. You can see Wikipedia icons on your screen that link you to related Wikipedia articles.

You can explore the same global satellite and aerial imagery available in the desktop version of Google Earth, including high-resolution imagery for over half of the world’s population and a third of the world’s land mass. But if your area has low-resolution imagery, do not expect to see something better on your iPhone. This app also allows you to add a Panoramic layer to view geo-located photos, or search for locations using the built-in search function.
